The first of ten shots, none of which will be related to each other. The goal is for each shot to be better than anything currently on my demo reel. This one was fully finished composited with a BG, the next might just be the rough animation, who knows.

I've also been taking an advanced life drawing class, will try to get some scans up at some point. At least there's an update here.

Busted out some more concept. Think I'm getting somewhere. Can I manage to capture a quality that professional daily concept artists achieve and still work in animation? My goal is to get to the point where if I crouch real low I can jump up and scratch that ceiling with my index finger. Dropped a process image bellow too in case anyone wants to take a gander at how I'm doing this stuff and has suggestions for improvement.

And yeah, at 16 bits I had some banding in the background, but opted to keep it since this ship is so deep in the ocean and who knows what things look like down there.

Cross posted from my deviant art, if I'm using the term correctly. I love sci fi and i fell in love with vegas. Why not mix them? I'm starting to think about the possibility of doing a film thats perhaps... more goofy and fun, while still pushing my skills to their limits and maxing out production quality. I already did a film about a lone female warrior struggling to survive a harsh environment, perhaps I can come back to it later. I guess I'm mulling things. I like what I have so far for my sci fi film and where my Eva designs have gone, but something about the film as it stands feels like it will be very laborious, whereas when I picture a sci fi film that takes place on a space elevator and casino as it rises up into the cosmos I am flush with ideas that would mix good character development with quirky plot possibilities and stunning visuals that are also fun to do. I was intensely passionate about finishing Klare two years ago, if I'm going to put the time and tears into another 5-10 minute film, I have to be just as passionate about doing it or the project will crush me as I pressure myself never to leave any project unfinished. Decisions decisions.

I'm still movin! Man do I hate animatics. I just want to animate and paint bgs! But its all for nothing if the film doesn't flow right or make any sense, so I must press on, get this animatic done, and show it to some trusted people to figure out what confuses them, what can be better, what can be more interesting, involving, and pump the emotion. If I can make you care about this character in 10 minutes, I will feel I have accomplished what all artists set out to do: Make you give a crap.

So I got my first piece of fan art sent to me by my comrade in animation Jeremy Polgar, who has a blog of his own: http://zooave.blogspot.com/ I'd show you what he drew but A)it's not mine and B) I'd make myself look bad. In any case, I was excited that he found my blog and liked my concepts enough to do some based off my character.

Basically Jeremy has drawn girls a shit ton more than I have, is a better draftsman, and better character designer. This is what you get when you put your ego aside and let someone help you out. After looking at some of his Eva sketches, I revamped my design and this is what I have so far. I'd be much more stoked to draw this face 900,000 times than the ones in previous posts. Anyhow, as usual, I'm still going to work out kinks and draw her from other angles until shes really settled in and im done with my animatic (which is 5 minutes long so far...).

I know it's been a while since I posted. Im in the midst of taking two weeks off from WB to get my act together more. Definitely have had more time to get my space film into gear. Spent much time on my first background, nailed Eva's character model down some more, and did a composite of what the final shot can look like, airbrushing and all.

Figured I'd let this blog know, I haven't posted because I moved to Burbank and internet has been an issue, though this friday I should finally have working net at home. Computer is all hooked up again and I have a good amount of stuff to toss up here. It's obviously impossible to be productive when you have to move, and I was under no illusions I'd be drawing a lot while packing and unpacking and setting up the new place was a priority.

Anyways, Here's an episode I recently worked on. I did the music video for the Fresh Prawn mashup, and had a little hand in the spy vs spy clip.

Despite having a horrible cold for a week that as soon as it was over, due to a weakened immune system, resulted in a Crohn's flareup of epic proportions, I still have managed to get some drawing done. Keeping the drawings to a small postit pad and scanning the batch in. Been having fun with small shuttles and space ships, as well as random crosshatched animal characters. Keeping the 50 cent piece for size. Also threw in some scaled down storyboards I've been working on for my next film that will probably take two years to complete. I hate the storyboard phase so much. Gotta plow through though!

Locking down her bodysuit for all scenes inside her ship. Settling into her face and will probably draw it a bunch more before the model is fully settled in. Toying with doing more than just black outline in some areas, but it will have to be really worth it as varying line color in the animation process can be a real cumbersome task.

The fact that she is not buxom and attractive means I will have to put in double the effort to actually sell her character and personality. I'm hesitant to show her character model around because I've noticed that everyone's first judgement is that she is not pretty. Well send me the crap to hell for not giving her long hair, a huge rack, a stupid and impractical outfit, and a big dumb grin on her face while she's flying through the air killing robots. Animation is plenty saturated with that shit already. Maybe I'm being somewhat feminist about it but I'd like to do something different and honestly I've always found short hair and a mildly androgynous look very attractive.

Also been doing floorplans. Not exciting but highly necessary for continuity and cohesiveness.

Well I've completed my first month at WB on "MAD" and it has been awesome. Getting to do a variety of tasks and wear many hats. It's an intimate crew at a large company, which is the best of both worlds. Loving being union so far. Pay is weekly.

I have decided to dedicate myself to doing at least one postit note sketch each day at work to loosen up and practice goal-less drawing. I figured it'd be fun to compile a summary each month and see what I've been pulling randomly from my ass. Threw in a fiddy cent piece for size recognition.

Experimenting with refining a character I used in a previous film, for use in my next film. Walking a comfortable path along the lines of androgyny. Eva, her working name, is an astronaut stranded in space. There is no motivation for makeup, and long hair is not a luxury she can afford either, as it gets ratty and can obscure her vision at the most inopportune moments. Weary eyed and struggling through a multitude of psychological symptoms that come with being completely isolated, I want to show the wear and tear but still demonstrate that this is a woman who does not fold. When designing the original character, a lot of my friends stated that they did not like her nose, to which I replied "neither does she."

Been working on finishing my new demo reel and homework for Concept Design Academy. The teachers here are multidecade industry badasses, so I'm getting my moneys worth. I'm taking sketching for environment, which is teaching me how to plan out and render backgrounds for film and animation. It's a great intro class and I'm pushing myself on homework as much as I can. I'm cleaning up and trying to get at least one possible portfolio piece out of each assignment.

We're not even supposed to be rendering right now. All line work. I couldn't help but add 2 tones to help the mood of the piece. Bellow is a cleaned up photoshop sketch of a smaller sketch I did while our class took a field trip downtown to the Bradbury Building, which was used in the filming of Blade Runner. Needless to say, the place has too much detail to ever fully render.

These are 5 minute or less thumbnails I did on site. Pretty much 1-2 inches wide each of these. Part of our homework was to pick one of them to take home, blow up, and do a larger version of. I picked the one that would make my life the most difficult.

Well new episodes are airing. Soon enough I'll be able to put my new demo reel on the internet. Here's a video I never linked to that I'm throwing up here since I haven't updated in a bit. They gave me this entire opening hoverdrum action sequence to animate and then at the end have a montage of clips from the rest of the new episodes to get fans juiced.

Piloting Bay Concept Art

For the sake of moving forward I don't want to dwell too long on any one part of the ship, or the ship itself, which has gotten the majority of this space film's attention the last few weeks. Basically every part of the ship needs to be operable in a vertical and horizontal state. She can crawl in horizontally through the hatch, and there are ladder rungs that pop out of the floor when the ship is vertically spiked on a planets surface. It acts as survey tower and pilots chair. When preparing for hyper speeds, the pod will fill with a *futury* gel that absorbs all shock and shaking the ship will undergo at high speeds. Every get annoyed when people would get tossed across the bridge in star trek because seat-belts had been outlawed? Not here.

As stated in the title. This my low poly google sketchup model that will be used for choosing camera angles, exported in these jpegs, and painted over in photoshop. Having a 3d model lets me really tweak focal depth and angle so I can be really analytical without having to sketch thumbnails over and over again. Also, there will never be a structural flaw or change from one shot to the next.

And here is some beginning concept art for the pilots pod that will be inside the front glassed area of the ship. Workn with different shapes.. maybe getting somewhere, I don't know yet.

Started adding "Party" details to the rear of the ship. Hoping to keep a balance of smooth surfaces and high detail areas.

And here's the beginning of the ship being modeled in Google Sketchup, a free and awesome simple little 3d program. This way I'll have a low poly model for experimenting with camera angles and ultimately painting over for backgrounds.

Going for design practicality here. I don't want to add anything just for the sake of making it look "cool." It's a one pilot ship, so I want the silhouette to be simple and balance smooth areas with "party" high detail areas. Will be getting to that shortly. This is where the design stands as of now, more changes to com.

Finally decided to open photoshop and get over my fear of sucking majorly at painting. These are to be considered quick thumbnail paintings to start getting ideas for what direction I will want to go in visually. I must say I had fun and they turned out better for the first couple attempts than I thought they would. Enjoy!

Taking time to get my mental and physical health back up to where I want them.

Took a hot bath with the lights off, got my ears bellow water, and totally deprived my senses. Got many ideas.

Possibilities for my next short film:

Klare Project II : Klare continues her struggle to stay alive and perhaps comes upon a small community of entrenched survivors. Must brave social anxiety, fear of being overtaken upon approach, and accepting help when she's hit rock bottom.

Space Adventure: Adventure Girl character explores space on a high speed spaceship searching for any life and any civilization.

"Free Agent": I love football. I want to do a film showing the less glamorous lonely side of being a pro player getting shipped from city to city, living in hotels out of a suitcase, and trying desperately to make a teams roster.

I seem to lean towards stories of isolation and "only child" characters. But, I want to end on positive notes and hopefully inspire people to want to unplug and interact with their surroundings more, and not be so alone. Talk to strangers, take their headphones off, open up, even if it's to a therapist or a support group. Now that my thoughts are recorded, time to play L4D with the lovely Alex.

Definitely getn him under my belt. I was able to draw a mostly frontal face on paper in animation dailies today with ink pen and no reference, so I think I am absorbing the character. Glad there is still room in my already decaying brainmass for new information. When are we going to have usb ports behind our ears and be able to store personal knowledge on data keys?

5 Second Day at Titmouse!

This past Wednesday, we at Titmouse had the opportunity to do a short animation, minimum of five seconds, for the day. It's a once a year thing and pretty sweet we get paid to animate whatever we want for that day. there was a screening of everyone's film yesterday and tons of hilarious content was enjoyed. I opted to do something short and push as close to movie quality animation as I could. I also had been itching to animate my adventure girl design, so here she is in all her glory. Available in HD at youtube.

Animation note: I love animating jumps where the character doesn't stick their landing perfectly. It's one of those little details that can make a drawn character feel really human and real. Animating imperfection, that's where it's at.

So I haven't posted in a little bit. This was the last progress I had on this painting. I've been a combo of working on Metalocalypse and doing art and animation for an i-phone game as an equity partnership project with an upstart company called SmoothLandon. The game is called Donkey Punch and I will post some fun stuff when it's out. It's definitely of the cartoony goofball look.

Things are well. Will hopefully be posting more artwork soon as I am about done with the game!

Hoping to finish this within the next two weeks. Nine days ago I went from hiatus and all the time in the world to compositing at Titmouse through the weekend and no time. I've also partnered up with a software engineer who started an iphone app company to do some games for him, which should be a pretty fun experience. Equity partnerships, gigidy. No complaints obviously, but it's cut into my drawing time a bit as I've come home fairly tired. Figure posting this progress report will help me make sure I get this done. Background is temp, still carving out much of the upper body and planning to do more with cloth ripples in her pants.

In life news, I've gained about 20 pounds in a month. As much as I hate what prednisone has done to my face, I am thrilled its given me the opportunity to bulk back up again so quick and get to a weight I've never gotten to before. Lots of gym time.

Something a little different

So my pops is a microbiologist at the University of Cincinnati. He had been in the same awesome lab since my parents and I moved to Cinci when I was two. I had my first job cleaning and sterilizing lab equipment there, and it was the only place where science was cool and interesting to me. Pops lined the walls of the lab with comic strips, lots of Far Side, Doonsbury, and Jim Borgman political cartoons. It gave the place a ton of personality, and by the time I was in highschool, most of the strips had that awesome bourbon colored decomposition going on that happens to recycled paper much quicker than regular.

Recently, he had to say goodbye to his old lab and move into a much smaller, more sterile looking one. He seemed pretty depressed about it, and when asked if he'd be putting up any posters or comics he replied that that wasn't likely. So I made him this to hang on his door for Hannukah.

The banner is made from multiple thin strips of paper running horizontally, with vertical lines of string running between them every 3/4 of an inch or so. Very hard to draw on, so there's limited room for detail. It's a chinese wall calender I got at a buffet in Cincinnati years ago. 12x36 inches, with microbes, cells, and histoplasma leaping epically out of a petri dish. He loved it :)

Sat down last few days and worked on a new model for Carl and I's little project. Began with a silhouette focused lineup and felt out different ideas till I came to one I enjoyed and that Carl liked as well. Next step was to do some angles and get the model down so here are the first two I've done. Figuring I may as well do a few more while I still have some time off and am not freelancing or nothing. Pretty happy with the back shot. I hate having girls pose for the audience, but I have to bust out of my shell a little bit and show some femininity here n there I suppose. With the body suit and the equipment, if I don't give her some curve, the only way you'd know shes female is her boobs, and I don't want to use that as a crutch. Here's to expanding a little bit.

I wasn't happy with what I did back in November, and I was sick, so the model just felt bland. I wanted to add intrigue without getting insanely impractical with bulky equipment. She has an H20 system on the back of her tactical vest that converts little globes of water into breathable oxygen, as I randomly decided her environment doesn't support that. I'll be animating her exhales bursting out of the two vents in the front cylindrical mouthpiece, which will be super fun. This will be a fun and challenging character to keep on model.

So I started doing some faces from my Facial Expressions book. I hadn't done a photo-real portrait in forever and I also forgot how much I like drawing dark skin. It's fun to draw with those crazy highlights. More contrast. In any case, I learned a valuable lesson not to press gummi eraser into the page so it doesn't roll away, otherwise I'd have rendered mr. crosseyes more. As I began, i was getting dark streaks where the eraser had been stuck. It made him look like he had tire-marks. Decided to do my own proportions for the bottom guy obviously. Just having fun and continuing to draw. May try and transition into cartoon style faces after doing a few more of these. Still searching for some more inspiration in that area.

Two more pages of body study, with some limbs and a quickie i did of Alex while she was playing halflife 2. Next step is to work on faces, obviously. I have no real face style and I'm going to do a bunch of different head shapes and experiment with eyes and noses and mouths n such. Take a little influence from some of my peers and respected artists and see where I go on my own with the information. These scans are a little gamey because I'm in photoshop with a mouse on my old monitor, as i am hauling my cintiq in to work every day for a freelance gig this week at www.buck.tv . Money. Back from the Dead

Classic blog start. One post then dead air. My excuse is a five day stay at Cedar Sinai Hospital for a Chron's flareup that immobilized me for a good month and was subtly chipping away at me since September. It's hard to gauge how your health is really deteriorating when it happens slowly over time. I hadn't really been 100% since August. Since Monday, I've completely cleaned up my apartment, drawn a bunch, and gotten back to the gym. I lost 15 pounds in November. Here's some of what I've been doing to get back to fundamentals and realize that I can in fact draw halfway competently. Adventure Chick is getting an overhaul too. Drawing her while sick, she was detailed but boring. Got some fun ideas to toy with soon.

I'm choosing Minima Black as my layout because I find it to be the least used on blogspot and I want to stand out as an artist, which begins with using templates created by strangers. That opening sentence ought to set the tone for the birthing of this brand new blog, ready to take on the internet and catalyze change. The only way to do that is to post sketches, concept work, and progress renders from animation projects. Let's begin.

I'm working on a one shot project with a fellow Scad grad, ex roommate, blogspotter, and good friend: Carl. It's set up to be about a ten second fly through of a highly detailed environment, beginning at the location of a flash animated character, zooming out to the location of a second character, to be animated out of photoshop layers. The goal is to maximize production value, detail, and "wow" factor in the span of a single shot. This allows us to focus all our energy on that one shot, and make it as sweet as we can. It will be a good measuring stick to see where our respective skills lie.

These were some early sketches for an adventure woman type character. By the way, if you're looking for drawings of insanely curvy women striking exotic poses and always winking at the viewer, look somewhere else, where millions of those girls are drawn daily. My women have shit to do. They don't pose for anyone.

There's plenty wrong with the drawing, but it's time to move forward and lock her down in flash, where some issues like my overzealous approach to cloth ripples can be easily solved. The pose isn't anything to write home about, I basically just wanted her arms out so I could lock down her outfit. It's a pose you might strike when a tailor is getting your waist measurements, and all of a sudden a tiger barges through the door and begins tearing through the men's overcoat section. That "getting ready to leave" pose.

Ink pass. When I animate, I like clean lines. They make me happy.

First color pass and where I am currently with the character. Carl's looking for a more rusty copper-toned spyglass and I'm going to do a look at some other colors just creeping outside of the earth-tone gallery. Color correction on the animation in after effects will determine her final look anyways.
